Combustion means burning.

Fuel, wheter it is diesel or petrol or LPG, contains energy. In order to liberate and use this energy, we must convert it. The internal combustion engine does this by simply burning the fuel in air. This converts the energy in the fuel into heat energy.

We then allow this heat energy to act on the crown of the piston, forcing it down the bore of the engine. As the piston is attached to the crankshaft by the connecting rod (con rod), this action will turn the crankshaft, thus producing power.
