This is the main shaft in an engine. The main journals run in the main bearings, and the big end journals run in the big end bearings. The con-rods and pistons are bolted to the big ends. All the working loads and stresses from power strokes run through this shaft. It must be constantly supplied with pressurised lubricating oil, to ensure full film lubrication at all times.
