NPN or PNP describe layers of doped semi-conductor material that have been sandwiched together.

When we put a layer of N-type material with a layer of P-type material, we end up with a PN-junction, or a diode.

When we add a extra layer of of either N-type material or P-type material to a PN-junction, we end up with a bipolar transistor.
