NTC thermistor shown removed from a sender unit, being held on a finger.Negative Temperature Coefficient: This term describes a semiconductor sensor, a thermistor, whose internal resistance decreases with a rise in temperature. This makes this sensor very useful for monitoring fluid temperatures in plant machinery-for example, coolant and oil temperature.

A semiconductor device with a Positive Temperature coefficient thermistor behaves differently-the internal resistance increases when the temperature rises. NTC's are more common.
