Newton metres.

Newtons refers to force, and metres refers to distance.

By multiplying the two, we are referring to work done (Force x Distance).

This work can be done in a straight line or in rotation.

If the work done is in rotation, it is referred to as torque.

You will come across Nm when you read workshop data on tightening torques for nuts and bolts: For example 'tighten the bolt to 20 Nm'.
