Coil springs of the type used in suspension systems. In the context of vehicle suspension systems, spring rate describes whether a spring is considered to be 'hard' or 'soft'.

For example, passenger cars are mostly built for comfort and many have what is referred to as a 'soft', comfortable, suspension system. The springs in such a vehicle would be said to have a 'low spring rate'.

In commercial vehicles, where heavy loads are often carried, and comfort is not a priority, the suspension system would be referred to as 'hard'. The springs in this type of vehicle would be said to have a 'high spring rate'.
