An exploded view of a thermistor, showing details of the internals, and of the NCT itself.A thermistor is a resistor whose resistance varies in accordance with temperature. This makes thermistors suitable for use in devices for monitoring and measuring temperature, such as coolant temperature sensors.

Thermistors whose resistance rises with an increase in temperature are said to have a positive temperature coefficient (PTC), and the symbol is shown below on the right. Those whose resistance fall are said to have a negative temperature coefficient (NTC), and the symbol is shown on the left.
