Plant machinery often operates on poor surfaces (mud, sand, gravel etc.). Also, plant machinery needs to put down large amounts of torque in order to move heavy loads across these poor surfaces. Sometimes driving wheels will tend to spin and energy will be wasted.

One solution is to fit speed sensors to the wheels, and feed speed data back to an electronic control unit. When this control unit gets too high a speed reading from a wheel, (i.e. the wheel is spinning), it can interrupt the supply of power to that wheel until it stops spinning.

These same speed sensors at the wheels can also be used to control an anti-lock braking system.
