The Cabra Training CentreUp until December 2010, the Cabra Training Centre was the home of the Construction Plant Fitters' Section. Here, Phase 2 apprenticeship training was delivered in the trade of construction plant fitting.

With the closure of Cabra, the CP Fitters' Section was moved to a temporary home in a satellite unit in Baldoyle. Having completed four Phase 2 apprenticeship courses there in May 2012, it is now apparent that the next two courses will also run there from July 9th, until November 23rd, 2012. We have no official word on the future of the CP section or the Phase 2 course.

CalculatorA calculator capable of carrying out the basic calculations involved in the maths and science related topics in Phase 2.

You are allowed to use a calculator in practical and theory examinations, but it is your own responsibility to have it with you on the day.

At the start of the course, you are issued with a basic calculator (at your own expense).

You can see the most current prices of this and all the other items issued on repayment here...

Suppliers of gas for heating. They are supposed to be on an automatic call-back to keep us constantly filled, but they seldom do this, and we keep running out of gas.

If the gas runs out, when it is refilled, boiler may take several on/off attempts to fire up, and before it does, it will display an F4 fault. Switch on and off several times, eventually, it will fire.

When you need a fill, don't bother ringing Calor, they are impossible to get through to. Instead, ring the drivers direct, they will come and fill:

Camber angle, positive or negativeThe camber angle of a wheel is a measurement of how much the wheel tilts away from the vertical, when viewed from the front.

If the wheel tilts outwards, it is positive camber, and if it tilts inwards, it is negative camber.

If the camber angle is added to the kpi, and quoted in the manual as one angle, this is called the included angle.

Camshaft operating an inlet and exhaust valveShaft driven by the crankshaft, at half engine speed. The camshaft opens the inlet and exhaust valves (the valves are closed by their own valve springs). The camshaft may also be fitted with an eccentric lobe to drive the lift pump, and may also be fitted with a skew gear to drive the oil pump, or other components such as a fuel injection pump.Camshaft

Controller Area Network.

CAN is a highly reliable, two wire, half duplex, high-speed network system.

This is a serial databus that carries information and signals to and from the various components of an electronically managed engine. It can also bring information from other electronically managed components such as gearboxes and air conditioning units.

This system needs only 2 wires, known as CAN_H and CAN_L (CAN high and CAN low).

  • Does not support node ID, only message ID. This means that all messages for all nodes are transmitted and read by all nodes. Any one node will only act on a message intended for that node, and ignore all other messages.
  • Supports message priority. The lower the message ID, the higher its priority.
  • Supports two message ID lengths - 11 bit (standard) and 29 bit (extended).
  • Not demanding in terms of cable requirements - twisted pair cable is sufficient.

Bus: In the context of electronic engine and vehicle management, a bus is an electrical pathway over which data can be transmitted. Think of them as electronic roadways along which the data travels.

CAN stands for Controller Area Network. This is an electronic network over which the various vehicle systems can communicate with each other.

Each vehicle system is known as a station. For example, engine management is a station on the bus, the instrument panel on the dashboard is a station, transmission shift control is a station.

The CAN bus is a serial bus. In other words, data is relayed on the bus one bit at a time, one after the other.

The CAN bus is simply a pair of wires, often twisted around each other, running around the vehicle and terminated at either end of the two-wire network with resistors of 120 Ohms. The only components connected to the CAN bus are the electronic control units (nodes). Other components, such as sensors, motors, light bulbs, switches, etc. are wired only to the electronic control units.

A vehicle which uses CAN bus for on-board diagnostics can only respond to an OBD-II request from a tester which uses CAN bus. From model year 2008 vehicle manufacturers must use the OBD protocol specified in ISO 15765, also known as Diagnostics On CAN.

Two wires of CAN bus, CAN-H and CAN-L, will have the same voltage when idle (about 2.5V), or a voltage difference of 2V when a signal is placed on the CAN bus. When a signal is placed on the CAN bus the CAN-H line is at a higher voltage than the CAN-L line.

Each electronic control unit have its own CAN identity code, like an address (may respond to several CAN id codes). If an electronic control unit is to communicate to another it will need to know the CAN identity code of the recipient.

obd2 pinoutA simple check to see if the CAN bus is in use in a vehicle, and accessible via the OBD socket, is to connect a resistance meter across pin 6 and pin 14. Due to the combined resistance of the two termination resistors at 120 Ohms each the overall resistance should be read as 60 Ohms.

OBD-II provides access to numerous data from the ECU and offers a valuable source of information when troubleshooting problems inside a vehicle. The SAE J1979 standard defines a method for requesting various diagnostic data and a list of standard parameters that might be available from the ECU.

The various parameters that are available are addressed by parameter identification numbers or PIDs which are defined in J1979. For a list of basic PIDs, their definitions, and the formulae to convert raw OBD-II output to meaningful diagnostic units, see OBD-II PIDs.
