Bearings used extensively in the transmission systems of plant vehicles. These types of bearings are excellent for bearing both radial and axial loads. Because they can bear the axial loads in one direction only, they are often fitted in pairs, for example wheel bearings.

This is a type of pulley locking arrangement often found on small plant machinery.

The pulley consists of two parts, an inner part which is tapered and sits into to the outer part. The inside of the outer part is also tapered, and the outside of the outer part has the sheaves of the pulley

The tappet is the part that follows the profile of the lobe on the camshaft. One end of the tappet runs against the camshaft, and the other end has an indentation into which the pushrod sits.

Another name for the tappet is the cam follower (because it follows the contours of the camshaft).

A common phrase used by cp fitters and mechanics is 'doing the tappets', which actually refers to setting the valve clearances between the rocker arms and the valves.

Shown below is a variation on a tappet. In this case the tappet sits over the valve and spring assembly. The camshaft runs on top of this arrangement, and once again, the tappet follows the profile of the cam.

During Phase 2, you must take and pass six practical exams, one for each module.

As part of those exams, as well as the practical work, you are also required to answer task related questions. These are questions your examiner will ask you about the topic being examined. For example, in the electrical practical exams, you can expect to be asked several questions about batteries, as well as other questions related to what you are doing.

These questions are essential marking points. In other words, you must be able to answer these questions in order to pass the exam.

Certain parameters that affect the operation of the engine are stored in the ECM. These prameters can be changed by the use of the EST. The tattletale logs the number of changes that have been made to the parameter. The tattletale is stored in the ECM.

Top Dead Centre: The instant at which the piston in an engine has reached its highest point within the cylinder. It is called "dead" centre, because the piston has finished its upwards movement, and stops (hence the use of the term "dead") before commencing its downward movement.

At TDC, the small end, big end and main bearings are in one straight line.

A point sometime before TDC is often used to set spark ignition (petrol engine) or diesel injection (diesel engine). For example, a petrol engine could be set to fire at 80 BTDC (Before Top Dead Centre), or a diesel engine could have injection set 150 BTDC.
